    Thallus dark red to brownish red, densely clustered, rarely solitary, firmly attached by a discoid holdfast, 2-4 mm diameter, thallus up to 35 mm high, consisting of an irregularly branched, firm stipe. Internal structure of stipe shows 4-7 layers of cortex composed of spherical to sub spherical cells, 11- 25 μm diameter, medulla of 13-20 layers of large spherical colourless cells and 30-55 μm in diameter.


    Stipe bearing ovate to pyriform, hollow, shortly stipitate vesicles 3-9 mm wide and 3-13 mm long. The vesicle walls consisting of 2-3 layers of inner, ovate, colourless cells, 33-78 μm in diameter and 2-3 layers of outermost ovate to sub-rectangular cortical cells, 2-6 μm wide and 5-13 μm long; medulla hollow; elongate and pyriform ‘gland cells’ 48-73 μm long often projecting in the cavity of vesicles.


Ecology

Epilithic on vertical walls just above low water level, frequently under overhangs, mostly on the landward side of rocks; continuously wave-swept.
